Our History of Speed

Our original owner Jimmy purchased a National Speed Center franchise after finding an ad in his favorite magazine. He opened the only National Speed Center on the east coast in Manchester, CT in 1970.

Jimmy owned the business until he passed away after an unfortunate boating accident. Jimmy’s friend Dan purchased the franchise from Jimmy’s mother when he returned from Vietnam in 1976. A year later Dan’s friend Jay joined the business and later became Dan’s partner.

The business grew and the store in Manchester changed over the years. Once after a flood damaged the building the business was forced to close for three months. It was a difficult time for National Speed Center but with the support of their customers and local businesses they were able to fix the damage and reopen quickly. Dan and Jay also expanded in 1987 in the same building from 1000 sq. ft. to 4000 sq. ft.

After over 50 years in business Dan and Jay decided it was time to retire. They sold the business to a long time customer and local business owner Steve of Steve’s Auto Care and Repair. National Speed Center moved from Manchester, CT to the neighboring town of East Hartford, CT and Dan stayed on working with Steve and his partner Matt to ensure there was a smooth transition.

Steve has over 30 years of knowledge and experience working in the automotive industry and a great reputation in the community. Matt is a user experience designer who will manage the shop and work to utilize technology to help the business grow.

National Speed Center’s goal is to continue the same great service and expand the products offered in new and exciting ways. Thanks for reading our history. Please follow us on our social accounts for new updates on products and services.
